Supporting Learning Materials Development

   EDUCATIONAL RECORDING AGENCY - E.R.A. -

The E.R.A. Licence

The ERA Licensing Scheme permits staff at educational establishments to record, for non-commercial educational purposes, broadcast output of ERA's Members.

Broadcast recordings can be ordered through the College AV Technician - Please note this is not a function or service provided by Flexible Learning and Learning Resources - or Staff can use recordings of broadcasts made outwith the College.

This does not apply to purchased, or copies of purchased, materials. Please refer to the Copyright on such items.

All recordings, or copies of recordings, must be clearly and appropriately labelled.

Acknowledging Broadcasts - E.R.A. Label Requirements

Always label or mark up the cassette or jewel case plus the tape or disc itself with the four following items:

  1. Date (when the recording was made)
  2. Name of the broadcaster
  3. Programme title
  4. The wording

'This recording is to be used only for educational and non-commercial purposes under the terms of the ERA Licence'.

Recordings stored digitally on a server should include the above four items as a written opening credit or webpage which must be viewed or listened to before access to the recording is permitted.

The ERA licence in itself only allows the use of recorded broadcast materials within the College. Use of recorded broadcast materials is covered by the E.R.A.+ Licence

The E.R.A.+ Licence

The College subscribes to the ERA+ Licence to allow the use of recorded broadcast materials through the Virtual Learning Environment within the UK. Recordings are not licenced for use overseas and staff would require to confirm copyright permissions.

Access to such materials must be through a secure login - password system to ensure that only 'authorised users' have access.

On Demand Services

On Demand Services, including 'podcasts', are currently NOT considered as broadcasts and therefore are NOT covered by the ERA or ERA+ licences. Staff would therefore need to confirm the Copyright for using such materials.
